National Socialist Black Metal (2001)

Everyone familiar with the "Black Metal" scene will agree with me on my observation that there's no Black Metal per se. Moreover the various definitions applied to Black Metal are not only non-congruent; they are contradictory to the point of canceling one another out. Why is that so? Many people consider Black Metal as a subdivision of heavy metal; i.e. a basically juvenile, often asocial, and sometimes sexist form of loud, shrill, and aggressive rock 'n roll with, in this case, occult/satanic overtones. The "lifestyle" that goes with black/heavy metal is as good as any excuse for teenagers (and adults who forget to outgrow their adolescence) to role-act as Marvel comic super heroes committed to hedonistic excesses.

On the bottom line, this definition of black metal can be applied to many other "subcultures" as well. It's about rebellion of Generation X; about indulging in petty "freedoms" such as smoking, drinking, screwing around (and yes those are tremendous freedoms to any 15 year old); and about shocking parents, teachers and preachers. So far, there's nothing novel about black metal and nothing sublime either. The whole black metal era of the 1980-ies, as pioneered by VENOM and BATHORY, can be defined by the aforementioned point of view. Needless to say, all the pompous "rockstardom" displayed by contemporary "black metal" bands such as CRADLE OF FILTH and DIMMU BORGIR is just another show case of what heavy metal is all about : self-indulgence coupled with self-gratification. What this definition cannot explain about black metal however, is the tendency of black metal bands and fans alike to be carried away by violent rhetoric and complete disregard for Judeo-Christian morality; as exemplified by (and forever engraved on the minds of those who participated on and witnessed) the outburst of homicide and arson in Scandinavia of the early 1990-ies.

What, so asked many people now and then, has the torching of churches to do with the probably provoking, yet ever so harmless heavy metal "lifestyle"? The answer is, of course, nothing at all. The vocabulary and terminology of "music-biz" can not define what took place in Norway, Sweden, and to a lesser degree in other European countries, from 1992-1994, because music in this case was the means to quite another end than "rockstardom". It was a cultural atavism, a sudden and inexplicable plunge back into pre-Christian, medieval conditions in all but outward reality. Like the Swiss psychologist, Carl Gustav Jung, would have said; Ancient archetypes resurfaced from our collective unconscious and repossessed receptive minds - which were, as a rule, still developing and thus especially impressible. The thus affected teenagers found themselves with an archaic state of mind and like in a mass-hysteria, they induced their condition unto others. It goes without saying that a, say, 18 year old adolescent who suddenly felt out of tune with his environment lacked the insight for a self-analysis.

There were but raw emotions, unformulated thoughts and a terrible need to express one's self. That is the cause for the frantic intensity put forth in the words, deeds and music of those protagonists in the "True Satanic Hordes" and the "Black Circle" of Sweden and Norway respectively. Like someone speaking in tongues, they tried to translate their inner turmoil, their "Weltschmerz"; but were equally misunderstood by all but a few. That their living anachronism was labeled "Black Metal" is an immaterial side-note. There was a music wise similarity to the Black Metal bands of the 1980' ties, but in everything else these Norse musicians constituted a class of it's own. They were fiercely opposed to the "music biz" as a matter of course. However, given the psychological rather than sociological nature of this phenomenon, it oughtn't perplex us to have watched the key players of Norse Black Metal coining terms with their mind-set of surrendering to the overwhelming outward reality sooner or later.

The compulsion for their extreme demeanor wasn't to be found anywhere but within themselves, although the peripheral (as seen from a European standpoint) location of their home countries has certainly intensified the symptoms of this compulsion. In hindsight, quite a few of the former "Black-Metal extremists" either wonder about or rationalize their former words and deeds. It should be noted that the probably most quintessential Norse black metal dates back to the era of 1991-1994, and could never be encompassed ever since. The archetypes, most prominently of the "dark side" of European, Heathen pantheon, have not vanished however. They matured along with those they possessed, until musicians of the Norse Black Metal tradition recognized and acknowledged them for what they are. While in between 1992-1994, Heathenism was apparent only rudimentary and partially clouded by "Satanic" imagery or fantasy-motifs, this Black Metal has since been understood in Pagan terms only.

Indeed, the blossoming Pagan revival among European/American youth culture was initiated and inspired by the tumultuous and often bloody events that marks the advent of Black Metal in the 1990's. It is a grave misunderstanding to mistake this particular Black Metal for the in all but name different branch of Heavy Metal. Unfortunately, there are so-called "Black Metal" bands and fans who have missed or ignored the transition the archetypal Black Metal underwent since the slaying of Oystein "Euronymous" Arseth of MAYHEM on August 10th 1993. What they are dabbling in is the same confusion that afflicted the protagonists of the "Black Circle" in 1992/93 and would not allow them a correct analysis of the forces at work among them. This confusion, which accounts for some outrageous statements in early interviews, has been overcome long since however. Not so among the "misanthropic Satanic Nihilists", though, who consider Black Metal (as they define it) a "weapon"(sic)! for the propagation of the "annihilation of humanity". There we have individuals, teenagers at most, who suffer from delusions of grandeur. They think of themselves as a "elite", pray for "global nuclear war", and imagine the "death of mankind" - which is, by and large, nothing but "subhumans" anyway. This "philosophy", which draws upon every Hollywood - cliché of "Satanism" and does terrible violence to European thinkers like Friedrich Nietzsche, has no psychological but a pathological cause.

It is this obnoxious definition of "Black Metal" which remains popular among, and this way indicates the extent of delusion at hand here, bands and fans from South America and Asia. One may suspect this misconception of Black Metal originates from their inborn lack of knowing about European archetypes. Hence they can not perceive and relate to anything but the most superficial symptoms of the archetypes at work here. That is furthermore underscored by their truly lame brained interpretation of National Socialism, which is incorporated in the image of such "Black Metal" - bands as another "manifestation of evil". The history of the National Socialist Germany is perverted by the same thoroughly false assumptions as every so often issued in Hollywood - propaganda. Where the Jews intend to pull their audience, however these insufferable "Black Metal" - bands revel in the alleged "atrocities" attributed to National Socialist Germany.

The archetypal Black Metal successfully mastered to interpret and to convey the archetypes from our collective unconscious. The proud identification with the Pagan heritage prompted bands and fans to take an active interest in Nationalist politics designed to preserve and to cultivate this very heritage. After all, heathenism is a folkish creed, and no genuine Pagan can turn his back on the concept of Blood (i.e. descent) and soil (i.e. origin). The archetypal Black Metal they listen to furthered the racial awareness and Nationalist engagement of many contemporary Pagans. This Black Metal is a rally - cry for those of our blood, motivating us to be committed and to remain steadfast in this our age of Ragnarok. Many bands and fans alike have also evolved the archetypal Black Metal to a definition unheard of; they say Black Metal is not music, but listenable ideology. This most sophisticated of all definitions gave rise to NSBM, National Socialist Black Metal. The NSBM is a refined tool of agitation and propaganda. It is now that music does not longer serve a trivial purpose such as entertainment, but is employed in an effort to compel the audience to take action. NSBM is a call to arms! While the sporadic violence of the "Black Circle" can be explained as discharge of overpowering archetypal dynamics by those concerned; the NSBM - activist is deliberately striking at will, in the full awareness of cause and effect. As rightly comprehended National Socialism is the supreme synthesis of Aryan archetypes and Aryan awareness, the NSBM is the equally supreme synthesis of revolutionary zeal and radical philosophy. It is NSBM that marks the logical conclusion of a movement set in motion by "A Blaze in the Northern Sky" ten years ago. Those who understood NSBM as a "music-genre" know nothing of it. NSBM is the audible quintessence of the born again National Socialism, and as such dramatically opposed to any definition that ignores the archetypal roots of Black Metal. NSBM is once again asking: "Do you want total war?!!"

Der Archetyp als historischer Faktor

Die Geschichte wird im kollektiven Unbewußten des Einzelnen vorbereitet, und wenn die Archetypen in einer ganzen Anzahl von Einzelnen aktiviert werden und an die Oberfläche gelangen, dann befinden wir uns inmitten der Geschichte... Das vom Augenblick benötigte archetypische Bild tritt ins Leben, und alle werden davon ergriffen. (...) Schon 1918 sagte ich, daß die ,blonde Bestie' sich im Schlafe bewege, und daß in Deutschland etwas geschehen werde.

Kein Psychologe verstand damals, was ich meinte, weil einfach niemand eine Vorstellung davon hatte, daß unsere persönliche Psychologie nur eine dünne Haut ist, ein leichtes Kräuseln auf dem Ozean der kollektiven Psychologie. Der machtvolle Faktor, der Faktor, der unser Leben verändert, der die Oberfläche unserer bekannten Welt verändert, und der Geschichte macht, ist die kollektive Psychologie, und die kollektive Psychologie bewegt sich nach Gesetzen, die von denen unseres Bewußtseins von Grund auf verschieden sind.

Die Archetypen sind die großen entscheidenden Mächte, sie bringen die echten Ereignisse hervor, und nicht unser persönlicher Verstand und praktischer Intellekt. Vordem Großen Krieg sagten alle intelligenten Menschen: "Es wird keinen Krieg mehr geben, wir sind viel zu vernünftig, um das geschehen zu lassen, und außerdem sind unser Handel und unsere Finanzen derart international verflochten, daß der Krieg überhaupt nicht in Frage kommt." Und dann brachten wir den furchtbarsten aller Kriege hervor.

Jetzt beginnt man wieder mit dem gleichen törichten Gerede über die Vernunft, über Friedenspläne u.a.; die Leute verblenden sich selbst in ihrem Kleben an kindischen Optimismus - sehen Sie sich nur die Wirklichkeit an! Es sind ohne Zweifel die archetypischen Bilder, die das Schicksal des Menschen bestimmen. Die unbewußte Psychologie des Menschen entscheidet und nicht das, was wir in der Gehirnkammer unseres Dachstübchens denken und reden.

Wer hätte im Jahre 1900 gedacht, daß dreißig Jahre später in Deutschland Dinge geschehen können, wie wir sie heute erleben ?!
Hätten Sie geglaubt, daß eine ganze Nation intelligenter und gebildeter Menschen von der faszinierenden Macht eines Archetyps ergriffen werden könnte ?!
Ich habe es kommen sehen, und ich kann es verstehen, weil ich die Macht des kollektiven Unbewußten kenne. An der Oberfläche jedoch sieht es völlig unglaubhaft aus. Sogar meine persönlichen Freunde stehen unter dieser Faszination, und wenn ich in Deutschland bin, glaube ich es selbst, ich verstehe alles, ich weiß, es muß so sein, wie es ist. Man kann dem nicht widerstehen. Es geht einem unter den Gürtel und nicht in den Kopf, das Gehirn zählt überhaupt nicht, das sympathische Nervensystem ist ergriffen.

Es ist eine Macht, die die Menschen von innen her fasziniert, es ist das aktivierte kollektive Unbewußte, ein lebendig gewordener Archetyp, der ihnen allen gemeinsam ist.
Und weil es eine Archetyp ist, hat es gewisse historische Aspekte, so daß wir ohne Kenntnis der Geschichte die Ereignisse nicht verstehen können.

Heute wird deutsche Geschichte gelebt, so wie der Faschismus lebendige italienische Geschichte ist. Wir können uns nicht wie Kinder dazu verhalten, intellektuelle und vernünftige Gedanken darüber haben und sagen: Es sollte nicht sein. Das ist einfach kindisch, Es geht um wirkliche Geschichte, um das, was dem Menschen geschieht und immer geschehen ist, und das ist sehr viel wesentlicher als unsere persönlichen kleinen Weh-Wehs und unsere persönlichen Überzeugungen.

Ich kenne hochgebildete Deutsche, die ebenso vernünftig waren, wie ich es von mir oder Sie es von sich annehmen. Aber eine Welle hat sie überrollt und ihre Vernunft weggespült, und wenn man mit ihnen spricht, dann muß man zugeben, daß sie nicht anders konnten. Ein unverständliches Schicksal hat sie ergriffen, und davon kann man nicht sagen, es sei richtig oder falsch. Es hat nichts mit rationalen Urteil zu tun, es ist einfach Geschichte.

Und wenn die Übertragung ... die Archetypen berührt, berührt man eine Mine, die genau so explodieren kann, wie wir sie im Kollektiv explodieren sehen. Diese unpersönlichen Bilder enthalten eine enorme dynamische Energie.

Bernard Shaw sagt in "Mensch und Übermensch": "Dieses Geschöpf Mensch, das in seinen eigenen selbstsüchtigen Angelegenheiten feig bis auf die Knochen ist, wird für eine Idee kämpfen wie ein Held."

Natürlich würden wir Faschismus oder Hitlerismus nicht Ideen nennen. Sie sind Archetypen, und so könnte man sagen: Gebt den Menschen einen Archetyp, und sie werden alle wie ein Mann vorwärtsstürmen; Widerstand ist ausgeschlossen. Wegen dieser erschreckend dynamischen Macht der Archetypen kann man sie nicht wegargumentieren. (...) Das bedeutet..., daß die Bedeutung der archetypischen Bilder voll anerkannt werden muß, von denen manche religiösen Charakters sind.

Ob Sie der Meinung sind, daß der Nazisturm in Deutschland einen religiösen Sinn gehabt hat oder nicht, spielt keine Rolle, Er hat ihn.

Ob Sie glauben, der Duce sei eine religiöse Figur oder nicht, ist unwichtig, weil er eine religiöse Figur ist. (...) Faschismus ist die lateinische Form der Religion, und sein religiöser Charakter erklärt die von ihm ausgehende ungeheure Faszination.

I want that this release shall be of an overall audio-visual concept - lyric, music, design - concerning the work of Serrano.

The contributors to this compilation can certainly promote many of his ideas and ideals to people who are not yet aware of Serrano, by using the means of music, lyric, and design.

Absurd "Demos 1992 - 1994"

The four demo recordings of Absurd, dating back as far as 1992, will be released on a double compact disc (via Darker Than Black and Elegy (USA)) as well as on a set of four 12" vinyls (via New Defenestration) in 2009.

Additionally to the Absurd demos, the one and only demo of Sacrifice Slaughtered Jesus (released in 1994) will be featured on this release too.

The recordings have been remastered in order to enhance the overall sound quality, and thus preserve the audial integrity of this early manifesto of true German Black Metal!

Supra Europam Sol Exoritur


There was a period in the history of Absurd when I considered a sort of "political statement" to be a necessary - even an integral - aspect of the bands' outward manifestation.

More than ten years ago, I came up with the idea for one particular piece of merchandise.

A banner of dark burgund; with a black sunwheel on a white background in its center, surrounded by a circle of twelve bronze stars.

It is obvious that this banner resembles the official flag of the European Union, yet it is a different Europe I have had in my mind: Neuropa, the new (and yet so ancient) Europe that is firmly based upon the principles of blood (descent) and soil (origin). Needless to say, this Neuropa is another manifestation of the "counter-reality" that always hovers at the brink of my mind like a mirage...

"Supra Europam sol exoritur, nos delebit an illuminabit?!"
(The sun rises up above Europe, will she eradicate us or enlighten us?!)

In this particular context, the sun = Swastika; this powerful insignia that has forcefully united Europe for a brief moment in human history, when it seemed possible to alter reality by the Triumph of the Will. Just like the sun who combines both constructive and destructive elements, the Swastika can be either Life or Death in the eye of the beholder.

The Swastika can be the guiding beacon for the Aryan Soul on her initiation into the Arcane and Occult, yet this ancient symbol can bring forth death and destruction just the same...

When I have asked No Colours Records to print a shirt using this design, they willingly agreed to do so. Unfortunately, they have then asked Prophecy Productions to print this shirt on their behalf. Prophecy Productions have not outright refused to print this shirt, but they have effectively botched this merchandise for reasons I can only guess at. After one or two editions, I asked No Colours Records to stop selling it. Yet this flawed execution of my vision has never ceased to bother me.

Ten years later, I'm in the position to produce this merchandise myself. Finally my vision will materialize in an appropriate manner!

The Forge of a New Aeon



We live in a Dark Age of decay and degeneration. This is Kali Yuga, the Iron Age and the final Aeon of the Indo-Aryan cosmology. Everything that once was noble and pure, it is corrupted and tainted now. In our Age, no grand vision can ever be implemented successfully. When the Man Against Time attempted to stem the tide over half a century ago, His Reich was as thoroughly crushed and defeated as to wipe it off the face of earth for good. It is not that His struggle on behalf of the Aryan Race was in vain - but to reverse the Cosmic Wheel is impossible; and His Reich, the last great stronghold of Aryan nobility, could not exist in an Aeon it was never made for. The more you defy Kali Yuga, the less you can live in this Age.

It is our urgent desire to escape from this Dark Age. We dream of, and yearn for, our return to the Golden Age, the Satya Yuga; when the Aryan virtues and values will be fully restored, when the Aryan awareness will be enlightened by the New Dawn, and when the Aryan avantgarde will be in control of their own destiny once again. This New Aeon has yet to manifest!

Many of those who loathe to be living in Kali Yuga, they presume it is yet possible to salvage our world. They strive for political power, because they earnestly believe they could change anything when it is them, instead of their adversaries, who is in charge. This is an illusion, however! It is not politics that cause the degeneration of the Aryan Race. It is our Age, Kali Yuga, that ceaselessly corrupts everything until the point of utter entropy!

We must accept that there will be no New Reich in this, our Dark Age. We must abandon the pursuit of power; because even though we could wield such power someday, it would come to naught and turn against us after all. We must not save our world. This world is doomed to perish when the Cosmic Wheel is coming full circle.

We must save our souls though. No matter how overbearing Kali Yuga appears to be, it can not reach into our hearts and taint our souls unless we let this happen. Our mortal bodies, even our sacred blood, can fall prey to the forces of this Dark Age. Yet our souls, if we preserve their purity and protect their integrity, remain to be immortal. They can exist in Cosmic Eternity, where they shine as bright as stars. It is our duty, as Heralders of the New Dawn, to guide the Aryan Race out of the Dark Age.

When Kali Yuga is coming to an end, and the Golden Age approaches once again, there will be death. Our world shall be devoured by cleansing fire. We must set it ablaze! War is the forge of a New Aeon, the one which will be wrought of the Iron Age. Lo and behold! The most arcane secret of Alchemy will reveal itself on a grand scale! Iron turns into Gold. Man turns into God. He will pierce the veil of Maya and gaze into Eternity.

"Lords of Chaos - The History of Occult Music"



When "Lords of Chaos" was published in Germany, maybe six years ago, the record label Prophecy Productions intended to release a double CD feat. songs of every band that is to be found in this book. They asked Absurd for one song, too.

Unlike Varg Vikernes, who dismissed this proposal right away, we agreed to be part of this compilation. When the news broke, Prophecy Productions took a lot of heavy flak for even considering to feature Absurd on this CD along with Black Sabbath, Venom, Sodom, Bathory, Mayhem, Darkthrone, Emperor, among others. Our opponents feared that "ordinary Metal-fans" could mistake Absurd for an "ordinary Metal-band" while listening to this CD. Needless to say, Prophecy Productions never intended to "whitewash" Absurd. Yet they were battered as badly as if they wanted to sign Absurd up to their record label.

Prophecy Productions released this CD without Absurd, after all. That was in 2002. Six years later, with this CD to be released in the US of A for the first time ever, Prophecy Productions wished to remedy their surrender to "political correctness" going rampant. Now Absurd is a part of this compilation as it was scheduled in 2002 already.

You can find "Eternal Winter" (taken from "Der fünfzehnjährige Krieg") on the second CD, between Ulver and Thorns. The "Tyrants of German Black Metal" are triumphant once again!

"Weltenfeind"-Split w/ Absurd, Grand Belial's Key, Sigrblot


After almost three years in the making, this audial "crime against humanity" has finally been unleashed upon mankind in the August of 2008.

Just like I have done for "Asgardsrei" ten years ago, also for "Weltenfeind" I came up with one particular concept everything - music, lyric, artwork - revolves around:

"This release is dedicated to those who know by heart that extreme art and extremist opinion are but two sides of the same coin. True Black Metal is a crime against humanity!"

The first track of Absurd, "Weltenfeind", is about the principle of the antipodes. Could we even comprehend what is truly noble and fair if there was not the stark contrast of the corrupted and inferior in this world, right before our eyes? We can tell the difference because we are aware of the antipodes. Yet they are not opposites, but two sides of the same coin actually. There is no light without darkness, no creation without destruction, and no life without death!

The second track, "Black Hand of Death", illustrates the inevitable fate for everyone: Death is certain, life is not. Regardless of how you consider death; if you welcome Him, ignore Him, resist Him, fear Him - the Reaper will come for you no matter what.

"Ulfhednir - Todesschwadron", the third track, can be deemed to be the sinister counterpart to "Sonnenritter". Whereas "Sonnenritter" is about an army resembling the Templar' Knights, the "Ulfhednir - Todesschwadron" is about an underground guerilla striking terror into the hearts of their victims. I have deliberately picked the oral sentencing at the "Nuremberg Tribunal" to be used as an audio sample in this song. What else but "crimes against humanity" can you commit in the revolt against the modern world anyway?!
