If a band’s status in the underground metal scene were based on skill, artistry, integrity, and innovation, Ares Kingdom would be heralded as the most important underground metal band in existence by anyone familiar with this genre of music. Unfortunately, such attributes rarely form the basis for the opinions of the masses. Nonetheless, for those who can appreciate their genius, Ares Kingdom are regarded as one of the greatest bands currently active in the scene. Their music, held together by the incomparable guitar playing of Chuck Keller, retains a healthy reverence for metal history while also exploring other territory less traveled. Perhaps Ares Kingdom are not given the respect they deserve because their music is simply impossible to categorize. One might be tempted to merely call it deathrash, but that would be far too simplistic a statement of the band’s intentions and influences. Ares Kingdom also appropriate elements of death and black metal into their structure and style for a result that is unique and wholly effective. “Firestorms and Chaos” compiles all of the non-album material released to date by Ares Kingdom. Featured here are the self-titled demo (recorded when the band was only a two piece consisting of Chuck Keller on vocals and guitars and Mike Miller on drums), the Chaosmongers Alive EP (recorded live in studio and featuring the full lineup including Alex Blume on vocals and Doug Overbay on bass), as well as the ‘Firestorm Redemption’ and ‘Failsafe’ 12” EPs which included B-sides not available on the “Return to Dust” album. For anyone who already has all of these releases, this CD is merely for convenience purposes. Expect no platitudes or cliche sloganeering here. Ghosts of the Baltic, for examples, narrates the grim fate of German refugees aboard the ships "Wilhelm Gustloff" and "Steuben", torpedoed by a Soviet submarine in 1945. "I hear their ghosts calling out to me ... from the bottom of the Baltic Sea .." As fate would have it, this CD appears right around the 8th of May, the so-called "day of liberation." While the "good Samaritans" of modern Germany and Europe fall over each other to apotheosize and genuflect their "liberation", they forget the horrendous suffering and injustice this "liberation" brought upon their own people. ELDRIG (Usa) "Mysterion" CD
The long-awaited third album by ELDRIG is now scheduled for imminent arrival, and, if you enjoyed "Kali" last year, "Mysterion" will transport you to more elevated planes of awareness. Musically, this is in the same vein as "Kali", only with a vastly improved production: strong neo-Classical influences; intense, high-pitched melodies unfolding majestically over furious blastbeats; long, fluid riffs; heavily harmonised guitars; ingenious bass lines; astronomical sound effects; and a weeping, melancholic - yet also magical - atmosphere. Although the music relies mostly on stringed instrumentation, synthesisers play an important role; occasionally, the synthesis is allowed to reach stratospheric heights, where its traverses the rarefied megahertz regions, but otherwise it is kept beneath the harmonic arch of the of guitars, providing a sonic coruscation in the ripples of time, rather than drowning the universe in its aqueous decibels. Consistent with "Kali" is the near-abstraction of the songs, which remains a feature of ELDRIG's general sound, even though vocals - rasping out of a darkly reverberated cavernosity - are used in this album ("Kali" was entirely instrumental). The song writing in "Mysterion" is quite varied, the frequent changes in tempo alternating the melancholic fury of its fast, ascending passages with slower, dreamy moments of introspection. The astral melodies are allowed to gradually ascend as they glide across the bars, describing a triumphal arch, until they reach an elevated summit, where they linger for a moment, surounded by the starry firmament in a moment of cosmic contemplation, before plunging headlong to the next stage of the journey. In many ways "Mysterion"'s music reminds of Holst's "The Planets", particularly the Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune movements. The construction of the album evinces great care and deliberation, with each element conceived as part of a harmonious, synergetic whole. Inevitably, this means there is liberal use of leitmotif - recurring patterns, establishing the cyclical nature of the music and representing the cyclical morphology of the cosmos. This cyclical conception of Nature, or history, well in line with the thinking of Conservative Revolutionaries like Oswald Spengler, Traditionalists like Julius Evola, and mystics like Savitri Devi and Miguel Serrano (the latter, together with C. G. Jung, has inspired the music in this album), is reflected in the graphics accompanying the music, and the esoteric texts accompanying the various occultic diagrams. The latter are all colour-coded in cyclical form, which in turn visually represent the album's musical construction. "Mysterion" is, therefore, more than just music; more than just another Black Metal album: it is an atavistic expression of something higher (a theme explored more in depth in the next album). Since we hold Eldrig in high esteem, we have afforded this album with a suitably exceptional presentation. The booklet comes printed onto a thick matt coated paper stock, with a partial UV varnish effect, while the disc has been pressed onto black polycarbonate, thus making it a worthy successor to "Kali" (if you purchased that album last year, you will remember it came with a parchment-like booklet and a disc pressed onto red polycarbonate). This is all very costly, but well worth the investment: a temporary material sacrifice, in exchange for long-term artistic excellence. In sum, we have here a truly monumental opus, rousing, triumphant, cosmological, and, above all, esoteric, profound, and mystical. Do not miss this extraordinary album.

The riffing is similar to BURZUM (circa "Filosofem") though FOLKVANG have less distortion & though the composition are hypnotic, they are slightly more rustic in their approach combined with samples from nature.The bass is minimalist & the drums fairly low in the mix, adding to the generally sorowful & nostaligc atmosphere.The fourth track presented by FOLKVANG is in a form of a STURM (Blr) cover of "Aryjski Sturm". Now i have no previous exprience of STURM but i can say that hte tracks forms a complete contrast to the contrast to the songs writen by FOLKVANG. It is a fast, melodic, punky track with very cool reverberated vocals thus ending the FOLKVANG side of the split in the spirit of True Aryan Defiance & belligerency. WODENSTHRONE are a Heathen Black Metal band hailing from British shores. Their sound fits well with Folkvang & its easy to see why the two bands released a Split album as they are both of the same mind and also maintain stellar quality throughout. However WODENSTHRONE are rawer & more primitive in their approach, though semi-melodic & never losing that underlying sense of sorrow and loss. A suitable comparasion is perhaps UR`FALCH who tend to mix aggression with nostalgic melancholia to great effect. WODESNTHRONE combine raw sections with slower, brooding, sedate arrangements( Again featuring sounds of Nature) that build to bitter crescendos. The vocals are a highlight, they are similar to those heard from early forgotten tomb therefore screamed with being screamed with passion and having a distinct edge. Inspired by the darker side of British History, WODENSTHRONE are another reason to support home-grown talent. Here we have a two amazing Heathen Black Metal on one impeccably presented CD.
